MARIFAX Exhibits at Marine Investigator Training Seminar

Outboard Motor Thefts Rise in Britain

cuffsAt last month’s annual meeting of the International Association of Marine Investigators (IAMI), where HINVALID was an exhibitor, numerous marine fraud and criminal trends were discussed. One topic of discussion was England’s recent surge in outboard motor thefts attributed to gangs of Eastern European-based, organized crime related individuals.

According to one British marine investigator, gangs of three and four individuals have been entering the country to steal motors, stern drives, and other marine items and then transporting them back to Poland, Romania, Lithuania, and other countries. Once there, the thieves often install counterfeit serial number decals and sell the motors. Recently, high tech investigative and identification techniques were credited for several significant arrests and recoveries but the problem is ongoing.
